Sort Order
Stuff keeps your tasks in the order you put them. It never quietly rearranges a List behind your back. When you do want Stuff to tidy things up, you ask for it with Sort.
Manually re-arranging
- Drag and drop any task to move it. Drop it between two tasks and it lands right there.
- On Mac, select one or more tasks and press ⌘↑ or ⌘↓ to move them up or down one spot. Moving past the edge of a section moves the task into the next one, like into a different Heading or day.
- Headings can be dragged into order the same way.
A task has one place in your order, so moving it in one view moves it everywhere it shows up. If you drag a task higher in Today, it moves higher in its List too.
Auto-Sorting
Open the Action Menu and choose Sort. On Mac, you can also press ⌘J, or choose Sort List from the menu bar.
Sort is a one-time tidy-up, not a setting. Stuff rearranges the tasks once and saves that order, so you can keep dragging things around afterwards. Changed your mind? Undo it like any other change.
- Sort just a few tasks by selecting them first. Only the selected tasks move, and everything else stays put.
- In Upcoming, tasks are sorted within each day.
How Sort orders stuff
- Unfinished tasks come before finished ones.
- Tasks that are in progress come first.
- Then tasks are grouped, in this order:
- Due today or overdue
- Ready to do, with no date
- Planned for a later date
- With only a Deadline
- Someday
- Waiting on a Dependency
- Within a group, earlier dates come first. Tasks without a reminder come before tasks with one, and earlier reminders come before later ones.
- Anything still tied is sorted by name, so "Task 2" comes before "Task 10".
Stuff doesn't sort by priority. If you'd like to track priority, see Prioritization.
Views with their own order
Some views are always arranged the same way, so you can't Sort them:
- Upcoming and Deadlines are arranged by date. Within a single day, tasks keep your order.
- The Adventure Log shows your newest days first.
- All Tags lists your Tags alphabetically.
- Search shows Spaces, then Lists, then Headings, then Tasks. Spaces and Lists are alphabetical.
Ordering the Launchpad
Drag Spaces and Lists into whatever order you like on the Launchpad. The Inbox and No List always stay at the top. Lists and Spaces that someone shares with you can be arranged however you like, too. Your order is yours alone and doesn't change anything for the person who shared them.
Grouping in Today and In Progress
Today and In Progress can show your tasks grouped by Space and List, or in a single list with no grouping. This choice is saved separately on each of your devices.
