Repeating

concept

Repeating lets Stuff create a new occurrence of a Task on a schedule. The Task you set up is the current occurrence; each future occurrence is a separate Task that Stuff creates when its repeat date arrives.

To make a Task repeat, expand it and open Repeat. Choose one of three types:

  • Regularly Scheduled repeats on a calendar schedule, such as every month on the 12th.
  • After Completion waits until the current Task is completed, then counts the chosen number of days, weeks, months, or years.
  • Specific Dates repeats on the individual dates you select.

The Repeat card summarizes the schedule and shows the next occurrence date when one can be calculated.

When a Repeating Task appears in Today

Turn on Repeat with Plan to give each new occurrence a Plan for its repeat date. That makes it appear in Today when the date arrives. You can also add a time reminder.

If Repeat with Plan is off, Stuff still creates the new occurrence in its List or Space, but it does not receive a scheduled Plan and will not appear in Today just because it repeated.

How the Start Date works

For a Regularly Scheduled repeat, the Start Date is the earliest date on which the first repeat may occur. If the Start Date does not match the schedule, Stuff uses the first matching date after it.

For example, suppose a bill repeats every month on the 12th:

  • If you set up the repeat on September 11 without a Start Date, the next occurrence is September 12.
  • If you set the Start Date to September 12, the next occurrence is September 12.
  • If you set the Start Date to September 13, the next occurrence is October 12.

You do not need a Start Date when the next date shown in the Repeat card is already the date you want.

What happens when you complete an occurrence

A Regularly Scheduled repeat stays on its calendar schedule. Completing the current Task early does not create the next one immediately or move its date.

With Only repeat if previous task is completed turned on, Stuff creates the scheduled occurrence only when the previous one has been completed. If the previous Task is still incomplete when the date arrives, Stuff skips that occurrence and advances to the next scheduled date. Turn this option off when every occurrence should be created regardless of the previous Task’s status.

For the monthly bill example, completing the September 12 Task before October 12 allows the October 12 occurrence to be created. Completing it early does not make the October occurrence appear before October 12.

An After Completion repeat behaves differently: completing the Task starts the interval. A Task set to repeat one month after completion has no scheduled next date until the current occurrence is completed.

Where to find upcoming occurrences

You can check the next date in the Task’s Repeat card. You can also expand the repeating tasks upcoming banner at the bottom of the List or Space containing the Task, or open Repeating through Quick Actions, to see upcoming repeats and their dates.

From the upcoming repeats list, you can skip the next occurrence when you do not need it. To end the schedule completely, use Stop Repeating from the Task’s Hole Punch Menu.
